How To Choose Suitable Rivet Size
How To Choose Suitable Rivet Size? The rivet size should depend on two key parameters.
- The type of rivet,
- The riveting hole diameter and length.
1. The type of rivet,
There are many different rivet types for different riveting jobs, you should know which kinds of rivets are more suitable for your riveting jobs.
- Solid rivets–Orbital Radial Riveting Machines
- Semi-tubular rivets and hollow rivets–Automatic Feeding Rivet Machines
Solid rivets
Solid rivets are the most common type and are used in many construction and manufacturing applications.

Hollow rivets or Semi-tubular rivets or Shoulder rivet
These rivets are similar to solid rivets, but have a hollow end.

2. The riveting hole diameter and hole length
2.1 Solid rivet
If you are using solid rivet,
Firstly, measure your product sizes, the Product riveting length E and Hole diameter C
Secondly, the rivet size is according to your product sizes.
- Shank diameter B, Shank length H, depends on your rivet supplier or rivet standards.
- Body diameter A, depends on your product Hole diameter C
- Body length F, equals your Product riveting length E + 1.0mm to 1.5mm
Solid rivet body length should be 1.0 to 1.5mm longer than riveting hole length. When you insert the rivet in the riveting hole, Size D is the rivet length that comes out of your product. Size D should be 1.0 to 1.5mm.
2.2 Hollow rivet, Semi-tubular rivet, or Shoulder rivet
If you are using Hollow rivet, Semi-tubular rivet, or Shoulder rivet
Firstly, measure your product sizes, the Product riveting length E and Hole diameter C
Secondly, the rivet size is according to your product sizes.
- Shank diameter B, Shank length H, depends on your rivet supplier or rivet standards.
- Body diameter A, depends on your product Hole diameter C
- Body length F, equals your Product riveting length E + 2.5mm to 3.5mm,
Notice: if rivet body diameter is smaller than 3mm, please add 2,5mm,
if rivet body diameter is larger than 3mm, please add 3.5mm. - Rivet hole diameter G, it is 1.0mm to 1.2mm smaller than Body diameter A
Hollow or semi-tubular or Shoulder rivet body length should be 2.5 to 3.5mm longer than riveting hole length. When you insert the rivet in the riveting hole, Size D is the rivet length that comes out of your product. Size D should be 2.5mm to 3.5mm.
2.3 Example
The product hole diameter is 5mm,
The product riveting length is 39.4mm, then, the rivet body length should be 39.5+3.5mm, equals 43.00mm
Therefore, we can use 5*43mm semi tubular rivet for this riveting point.
